I've been trying to write music like this for years, but I can never quite nail it; it always just seems to sound like wrong instead of calculated chaos. :(
Congratulations. You and Ms. Maeflower are making me wish I'd attempted this one myself!
Brilliant! You've obviously been practicing your whisk over the last year, because this is the rockingest whisk playing I've ever heard, not to mention the cheese grater. It's exciting to finally hear what you've done with this challenge. I love the guitar part and the rhythmic phrasing of the words - especially on "panacea cereal prize".
(I just recorded a demo which I'm waiting until the 29th to post - it's definitely not in the same league as yours.)
Whoa. I'm really glad I did my version before listening to anyone else's take on this -- because I'm not sure I would have been brave enough after this. Phenomenal, Charlie. What a great groove.
levitator, I think it is all over the place, lol. I tried to re-record it the next day once I actually knew it, and the lead guitar was nowhere near as good, in my opinion. :o)
Yes, this is MONDO, no pseudo about it! How on earth do you do that trick of it sounding almost on the edge of being all over the place and yet it hangs together wonderfully. Really cool guitaring. Iceland whale indeed. Fab!
In my own head I divide XTC's catalogue into two sections, pre- and post-Skylarking. Oranges and Lemons was my favorite post-Skylarking album for a long, long time, until Apple Venus came along.
"It's Nearly Africa" is one of my favorites from English Settlement (my favorite pre-Skylarking XTC album).
Jules, though I'm familiar with English Settlement and remember Nearly Africa and Senses Working Overtime, it was Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons that lived on my CD player for years, especially Skylarking. :-)
Man, I'm getting a big smile from this! Especially the line that springs from "Panacea cereal prize" and leads to the solos. (Which have a beautiful cassidy/birdsong feel, so to speak.)
Oh this has a nice groove. I love the harmonies....and the guitar riffs....yours is so pretty! Look at you--whipping out this beauty of a song in so little time! Gorgeous! And COMPLETELY different from mine. Wow.
Impressive! Well I coulda done that if my ancient Casio did odd time signatures LOL. Believe it or not, I'm starting to hear Billy Idol's Rebel Yell when I read the lyric.
Wow.
...
No, really. Wow.

Haha! Very nice, I like all that's going on here, really makes it 3-dimensional, which is what one would hope for. Nice break too, way to go!

Totally different from what I put together on it ...

It's the live version, but Dave is doing the business on guitar.

Have you ever heard XTC's "Yacht Dance" from the album English Settlement? I thought of that immediately upon hearing this track.
Your guitar work here is stellar.
The wandering time sig seems appropriate. How odd.
