"Dance Floor Spin"

I've often wanted to be in a band that could get gigs in pretty much any venue... like acoustic jazz string bands. This song has such a rapid syllabic patter and specific internal rhyming scheme that I've only gotten one verse out that was conversational enough to suit me. I'll come back to it when I have more energy.

--

Chord progression so I can remember it later:
Dm-A-Gdim7-Bb-A
F-C-Bb-A
Dm-Ddim7-F-Gm, reverse back down to A

Lyrics

My friend Judy
Is a must at every party
Cuz the way she shakes her booty
Makes everybody grin
And who can resist her?
When she takes 'em by the wrist
For a shimmy
And a sexy little dance floor spin

isaac is shaking his booty.  fun stuff... part of me wants to agree with the commenters below who said this style is really your best, but you've been good at every style i've heard thusfar, so who can choose?!

Jazz is definitely your thing, Charlie. Excellently done! I love the way the lyrics sit.

Holy Cow You're good. Not many people attempt this kind of genre, much less pull it off successfully.

Doood!  This is classic Charlie Cheney, through and through.  I love the lyrical imagery, and OF COURSE the two voice lead vox.  Brilliant.

You have a  consistently excellent voice as a writer, Charlie.  Your songs may be from totally different countries, and live in totally different cities, but they could still all inhabit the same Brooklyn walk-up, if you know what I mean.  Cheers and double cheers!

Ooh me likes, more more more!  lol what you've got is such fun...and it's also...dare I say it...rather sexy.  =)  Please oh please oh please let me know if/when you add more, I'd love to hear where it goes!

I want SO BAD to hear a full song of this. I think you know you've got a great stanza there, and a very fitting, original progression. When the rest comes, I hope you'll share it. This is cerrrrtainly swing hall gig material.

The jazzy / gypsy genre suits you -- much like WJDD, this has a great groove and vibe.
  9.  Josh Belville | 18-Feb-08

oh man, i love this style of guitar.  feels klezmatic.  i can't wait to hear the rest!

Oh, this is fantastic!  The guitar is brilliant--I agree with Andy and Denise that it sounds like it belongs on a movie soundtrack.  But only a very cool, super hep kind of movie.

Now this is sophisticated fun.  That vocal line really is amazing.
  12.  Chip Withrow | 18-Feb-08

Like a cross between the Kinks and Django Rheinhart (sp?). I love the deadpan vocal delivery.

Charlie! I believe you're onto your purview here. I can see it in my mind's eye, pencil-thin mustache, miracle oil in your hair, with two drop-dead gorgeous flappers clinging to you like slices of soggy white bread. A Charlie and cheese sandwich of sorts. Delectable.

btw. Let me in wee-ooh, ooh-wee-ooh. Want some help with lyrics? I love folk music.

    I love it!
Add a shuffle it would be perfect!

I could totally hear Harmonious Wail doing this.  You might want to consider writing this for a different vocalist with a different style - might be a way around the difficulty of keeping the verses conversational enough for your style.  Though maybe writing conversationally is an overall songwriting preference for you - in which case, yeah, it'll take some energy.  I'll be interested to see where you take this.

very cool!! You definitely should finish this. Wonderful big band/jazz sound. I could hear this in a movie soundtrack. Look forward to hearing more of your music - D

Please oh please oh please finish this. What a howl. Musically fantastic, lyrically bizarrely balanced.

Love the chord progression, too; I think Dylan used a Dm somethingdim somethingelse Gm pattern in "What on Earth is That?" from "Songs I Never Wrote"
