Palmer Johnson Yacht

Now that the the shipyard's closed
I'm working at the Conoco
You drive by with your Palmer Johnson Yacht
Mount Gay Rum, gin and tonic
For your trophy bride who's mounted on the front

Big Box Billy is changing the city
Putting strip malls up for a million bucks a shot
But I don't get a lot of job satisfaction
Pumping out gas for your Palmer Johnson Yacht

There's a hole in the road
There's a hole in my home

For seventy years we've worked this city
Since my grampa came and landed on the dock
My dad and my brother and me were riveters
But that's all smashed like a trawler on the rocks

Still I feel lucky cuz my kids are healthy
And my wife's got bene's from working at the bank
But I don't get a lot of job satisfaction
Pumping out gas for your Palmer Johnson Yacht

There's a hole in the road
There's a hole in my home

Here's a scan of the original lyric sheet. The scrawls on the right margin are Pat MacDonald and Jackson Browne's autographs.

Pat wrote "I love this" on there with an arrow pointing at the lyrics, and Jackson wrote "Tell it" on there above his sig. It was pretty cool, I asked Jackson to sign it, thinking he'd just mindlessly scrawl his name, but he took it and read all the lyrics first... then he had this sort of bemused grin and mumbled something to himself more than to me like "yeah, this is cool" and signed. Then he shook my hand and just looked in my eyes for a beat or two, just looking at me intently with the same smile. I can't remember if he said anything more, I think he just shook my hand and grinned.
